What happens when you have type 1 diabetes and you own an ice cream shop? Well, you hear a lot of dumb jokes, of course, but you also have a lot of fun. Guest Brandon Wallis also has a little girl with type 1, diagnosed at age 2, and he has some good advice for diabetes dads as we head toward Father’s Day.

Plus, it’s off to camp for a lot of kids already this summer or in the weeks to come. In our Know Better segment, Stacey's son Benny gives us his take diabetes camp sleep away camp.

Diabetes Connections turns three years old this week!  To mark the occasion, we turned the microphone around. KTLA News anchor and diabetes dad Frank Buckley interviews Stacey 

They talk about everything from Smart Insulin to Encapsulation to Stacey's family and the emotions behind a T1D diagnosis and Stacey looks back to our very first episode with Christel Aprigliano.

Take a look behind the scenes of WNYC’s Sugarland. This radio series, podcast and comic made headlines around the country when it was first published. We’ll talk to the Mary Harris, editor and host of WNYC's health unit and Dr. Cheryl Olson who has a son with T1D and who contributed to the series.

 

Gavin Griffiths is the founder of DiAthlete. An experienced distance runner and endurance maniac, Gavin has accomplished 74 extreme physical challenges – from running 30 mile marathons each day for 30 days, to cycling over serious inclines of the Alps – always motivated by living with type 1 diabetes. He just completed 25 marathons in one month!

The Dexcom G6 has been on the market for just about one month. Stacey checks in with company CEO Kevin Sayer for a frank discussion about cost, sensor life and integration with pumps and wearable fitness devices like Fitbit.

Pumps, CGMs and meters can help manage diabetes, but not a lot of thought goes into how they make us feel. New studies are looking at the mental side of diabetes.  

Dr. Korey Hood is a clinical health psychologist and Professor of Pediatrics and of Psychiatry at Stanford University. He’s lived with type 1 since he was a young adult and has a lot to say, especially about teens with T1D.  

In our Know Better segment, Stacey explains a new study about low carb and type 1 that was recently published in the Journal Pediatrics and written up in the New York Times.

Determined to serve her country even after a diabetes diagnosis kept her out of the military, Caroline Marshall found a way. She served as a police officer, interned with NCIS and she’s now a special agent with the FBI. You'll hear on this Mother's Day episode that she and her husband, a National Guardsman, just had a baby.

Stacey talks to professional snowboarder and founder of ROI Sean Busby who lives with T1D and Lupus. It took Sean a long time to let an accurate type 1 diagnosis and even longer to determine he has lupus. He shares the story of that journey, explains how he got back to competitive snowboarding and why he started Riding on Insulin.

We find out more about ROI from Mollie Busby. When she and Sean aren't skiing and snowboarding and teaching kids how to love the outdoors, they live in a Yurt in Montana!

Dana Lewis first created #DIYPS in December 2013, just so she could better hear her her continuous glucose monitor (CGM) alarms better. Since that time Dana, and many other diabetes tech pioneers, have pushed forward with the Open Artificial Pancreas System. 5 years later we look at what Dana's doing now and what she has in mind for the future. 

Dana also shares what the FDA and healthcare companies can learn from the do it yourself community. We also talk about what holds back many people (like Stacey) from jumping it DIY diabetes tech and why Dana says we shouldn't let our fears stop us.
